Exclusive Excursion
Begin your exploration in Monaco where your motor coach awaits at the pier. You will travel along the Middle Corniche, which provides the only access to the medieval village of Eze which clings like an eagle’s nest to a rock spike towering 1401 feet over the sea. Arriving in Eze, you will enter the village by foot through the 14th century fortified gate. Explore the narrow streets with your guide and wander past carefully restored artisan shops and on reaching the top of the village you can enjoy the magnificent views of the coast. Enjoy refreshments at “le Nid Diaigle” before taking some free time to browse through the town’s elegant and unique shops. Re-joining your coach, continue to Monaco and the foot of the Rock of Monaco, the oldest of the Principality’s three sections. On the top of the hill, a guided walk will take you through the narrow streets, past the Oceanographic Museum, the Cathedral containing the tomb of Princess Grace and the Prince Palace. At the end of your guided walk enjoy some free time before the short drive back the pier and your ship.
Port Details
Barcelona, Spain
Dynamic Barcelona is all about architecture, from the magnificent medieval buildings of the Gothic Quarter to the Modernist movement typified by the work of Antoni Gaudi. Though his materials were stone and metal, his forms were organic, awash in curves, swirls, and colors. His masterpiece is the amazing Church of the Sagrada Familia, colossal and as yet unfinished, though construction began in 1882. A contemporary contribution to the scene is Ricardo Bofill’s post modernist National Theater of Catalonia, an imaginative combination of classical and modern design, with a greenhouse-like lobby.
Roses (Figueres & Girona), Spain
Only a half hour drive from the port of Roses is Figueres home to the Dali Theatre Museum. The museum houses the largest surrealistic object in the world. Once a theatre the building was destroyed at the end of the Spanish Civil War and on its ruins Dali decided to create his museum.
Marseilles (Provence), France
At the same time bustling and picturesque, this oldest of the great French cities has progressed with the times, modernizing constantly. If it looks familiar that might be because it has played a role in many films, French and international, in fact just off the coast looms the foreboding Chateau d’If, where the fictional Count of Monte Cristo was imprisoned. Or perhaps you recognize scenes from paintings; the small port of l’Estaque was once a favorite haunt of artists such as Renoir, Cezanne, and Braque. In addition to a lengthy history, today Marseilles is well known in France for its hip-hop music. Who knew?
Sanary Sur Mer, France
Nestled between Marseilles and Toulon, the port of Sanary-sur-Mer is located in Provence on the Cote d’Azur, and is arguably the sunniest place in France. Its beautiful coastline is dotted with small beaches, while Sanary’s quiet, pedestrian streets cluster around the medieval 13th century watchtower—now home to the Frédéric Dumas Diving Museum, and featuring original equipment of undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau. Visit église Saint Nazaire, a late 19th century Gothic Revival church, or admire the view from the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, built in 1560. Cap your stay with a stroll along the palm-lined harbor, where you’ll find rows of old Provençal wooden fishing boats, pointus, and if you’re lucky, some local fishermen selling the day’s catch. Or simply taste the freshest seafood in any number of Sanary restaurants and enjoy watching the bustle of everyday life in this charming and inviting town.
Calvi, Corsica, France
Arrival by sea is the best way to greet Calvi: for a breathtaking view of the lovely port, the fortifications towering over it, and the backdrop of rugged pine-covered hills. Once ashore, explore the citadel, containing a palace and the Cathedral of St. Jean Baptiste, erected to hold a supposedly supernatural crucifix. The social hub is Quai Landry, a seaside promenade lined with bars, cafes, and shops. In the surrounding countryside you will find many unspoiled mountain villages, and just offshore a nature reserve where crystal clear waters nurture a rich marine life.
Portofino, Italy
Picture a tiny town of pastel houses lining the shore of a small harbor full of sleek yachts, crowned by a castle and backed by verdant hills dotted with villas. Throw in charming waterside restaurants specializing in seafood, and a national park with miles of hiking trails among chestnut and olive groves, where you can work off the pasta that in Italy is just the first course, between the antipasto and the main. Now you know why this quaint little fishing village became a playground of the rich and famous, and why you should consider joining them.
Monte Carlo, Monaco
The tiny principality of Monaco, a sovereign state of just under one square mile, has an outsized resume, boasting some of the planet’s most expensive real estate, and the world’s most prestigious casino. Facing the sea, and engulfed on the other three sides by France, it has been the domain of the Grimaldi dynasty since the 14th century, and enjoys the same glamorous reputation as the rest of the Riviera.
Nice, France
Nice, Queen of the Riviera, is imbued with the joie de vivre that epitomizes this fabled coastline. Perhaps it is that famous light and color that has long attracted artists, that makes one feel so alive, makes a stroll down the wide seaside Promenade des Anglais so exhilarating. The old town is a warren of meandering lanes edged by tall houses, and small, alluring shops. A treasure trove of archaeological and fine art museums is not to be ignored, nor is the famous flower market, awash in the heady scent and glowing hues of blossoms, and amazing displays of produce.
